Giving the Best in Breast Care to a Local Volunteer
That's when Annette, along with her husband, Bill, and son, Timothy, were blindsided by a frightening diagnosis: two types of cancer, one in each breast. "I was terrified, as anyone would be," she says. "You really don't know how you'll deal with something like that until it happens."
Fortunately, Annette found the support she needed at Southern Ocean. "I've been afraid of doctors all my life,"she says. "But these doctors were wonderful. My life was in their hands, and I knew I could depend on them."
Compassionate Consultation
Annette needed a double mastectomy, along with chemotherapy and radiation. She knew it would be a long road to recovery, but she also knew she would have the best care and support every step of the way.
"When a woman is going through something like this,we strive to be direct and reassuring," says Renee Georges, M.D., a breast surgeon with Southern Ocean Medical Center and Meridian Cancer Care. "I'm there to listen, whether she has concerns about her treatment options, transportation issues, or even which family member will come with her to her next appointment. I listen and take time to go over everything that's going to happen in a simple, clear manner."
"Dr. Georges made me feel so relaxed and comfortable, it was like having one of your friends there," says Annette."You can see how devoted she is to her patients, and that she knows exactly what she's doing. I knew that everything would be handled properly."
Comprehensive Care
Annette's experience is not unique. Thousands of New Jersey women with cancer find world-class care just minutes from home at Southern Ocean Medical Center.
"We provide state-of-the-art care for breast cancer," says Dr. Georges. "We have the most advanced diagnostic technologies, as well as board certified surgeons, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists to address every aspect of care."
Today, Annette is healthy and back managing the thrift shop — raising money to expand the Medical Center's Emergency Department. She hopes to show other women with breast cancer that they, too, can beat the disease.
"In the majority of cases, the disease is treatable and curable," agrees Dr. Georges. "If you have breast cancer, the most important thing is to be diligent and positive about your care."
