Meridian Health: Leading the Way in Research

If you've been treated at a Meridian Health hospital, you probably know that you received some of the highest quality of care available. But did you know that part of what makes us a leader in health care is that we're also a leader in research and academics?

Cutting-Edge Research Saves Lives

"Through Meridian's commitment to research, we're able to provide the most up-to-date care to patients, create new knowledge that will further improve treatments down the road, and attract the very best physicians out there," says David Kountz, M.D., senior vice president of medical and academic affairs at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. "Many of the finest physicians come to Meridian because they want to be part of a health system that's engaged in research."

What's more, research conducted at Meridian has very real benefits for patients. Much of the research is in the form of clinical trials — studies that offer patients medications, treatments, procedures, and other therapies that may not be approved but could have benefits beyond what's currently available, Dr.Kountz says.

"For instance, patients who come to any Meridian hospital and have a very high risk for heart attack may be candidates for a new pacemaker-like device called AngelMed® Guardian System," he explains. "If it detects heart rhythm abnormalities that could signal a heart attack, it warns patients to get to the Emergency Department hours before they normally would, which can be lifesaving."

Meridian is one of the only health care networks in the country —and the first in the New York metropolitan area — to offer this sophisticated technology.

The Future of Medicine Starts Here

In addition to Meridian's contributions to medical research, it's also dedicated to training young doctors through its resident program.

"There's a period of time between when students graduate from medical school and when they are fully independent in practice where they receive training to further develop their skills," Dr. Kountz says."For more than 50 years, Meridian Health has provided that education and guidance."

Residents at Meridian practice under the medical staff's constant supervision. "Patients should appreciate having residents around because they provide another set of eyes and ears, which helps us provide the most precise and thorough care possible," Dr. Kountz says. "And we're meticulous about providing the type of supervision patients expect."

Whether patients participate in clinical trials or receive care from a physician/resident pair, they can feel good about contributing to the future care of patients who are just like them. "There's a sense of personal satisfaction that comes with playing a part in advancing the future of medicine," Dr. Kountz says.
