Colonoscopy
The visual examination of the inside of the rectum and colon, using a lighted, flexible tube connected to an eyepiece or video screen for viewing. This device is called a colonoscope. The colon (large intestine) is 5 to 6 feet long. A complete colonoscopy requires the physician to pass the colonoscope to the end of the large intestine or colon to the rectum. A colonscopy is typical performed as an outpatient procedures in same day surgery by gastrenterologists.
