What is Radiation Oncology?

Oncology is the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, and radiation oncology (or radiation therapy) is the treatment of cancer and other diseases with radiation.

For the procedure, radiation in various forms is used to kill cancer cells by preventing them from multiplying. Therapeutic radiology may be used to cure or control cancer, or to alleviate some of the symptoms associated with cancer.

Therapeutic radiology treatment may be used alone, or in conjunction with other types of treatment, such as surgery, chemotherapy (the use of anticancer drugs to treat cancerous cells), and/or other treatments.

The level and type of radiation used will be determined by the radiation oncologist based on the type of cancer, location of the tumor, and sensitivity of the surrounding tissue.

Radiation Oncology at Meridian Health

There’s no easy way to cope with a cancer diagnosis. But when radiation therapy is the best option, you can take comfort knowing you’ll be in the hands of the most trusted oncology team in the region.

Our team includes radiation oncologists who have trained at some of the most respected and well-known cancer centers in the world. Our radiation therapists and nurses are all licensed and oncology certified and are an integral part of our cancer care team. Because of this, patients in New Jersey can rest a little easier knowing they will receive the best treatment available without the stress of traveling to major metropolitan areas like New York City and Philadelphia.

Collaborative Care Model

Our extended team approach to treatment is essential to helping patients deal with the range of emotions and increased stress that is often the result of a cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment.

Each patient will have a team of doctors, including their primary care physician, diagnosing and treating surgeon, medical oncologist, board certified radiation oncologist, and board certified radiation therapists. There is constant communication about a patient’s progress within the entire team.

A Multi-disciplinary Approach

Each week our multi-disciplinary radiation oncology team of physicians, nurses, physicists, and therapists meet to consult all prospective and retrospective patient cases. During this time all aspects of patient treatment is reviewed in order to develop an optimal treatment strategy.

Oncology Certified Nurses

And, our unique Nurse Navigation Program enlists the support of highly trained nurses to help coordinate a patient’s journey through the treatment process, including education, social service aid and insurance matters.

Other supportive care services including genetic counseling and testing, psychosocial support, nutrition counseling, rehabilitation, support groups and other services required to ensure the highest quality of life possible.
