CyberKnife Radiosurgery System
For more than five years, radiation oncologists of Meridian Cancer Care have been providing a revolutionary alternative cancer treatment option for patients in New Jersey. CyberKnife is a painless non-invasive robotic radiosurgery system used for treating benign tumors, malignant tumors and other medical conditions. Using targeted radiation beams, CyberKnife is able to target and track specific tumors, including otherwise difficult to reach or inoperable tumors, without an incision or use of a scalpel. The precision of the CyberKnife treatments reduce patients' radiation therapy sessions from as many as 30 to 5 or less.
CyberKnife is the first system to track a tumor's true location during treatment, providing the sub millimeter accuracy needed to destroy the malignancies of the tumor while preserving healthy tissues and organs. Plus, because it is non-invasive, and requires little if no sedation, it has significantly less complications related to the procedure than traditional open surgery. This usually leads to better quality of life for a patient both during and after treatment. CyberKnife requires no recovery time, and most treatments are done on an outpatient basis.
More than 800 patients with cancer have found new hope from Meridian Cancer Care physicians' use of CyberKnife. Found only at a handful of America's cancer centers, the CyberKnife is available close to home and treats many cancers, including:
Meridian Cancer Care is among the first to bring the CyberKnife to the New York-New Jersey region in 2005 and now stands as one of a limited number of medical facilities in the U.S. to offer patients access to the CyberKnife System. Meridian Cancer Care radiation oncologists, along with a multi-disciplinary team of experts, have been performing CyberKnife treatments for over five years for patients from throughout the tri-state area.

CyberKnife Capabilities
Different from other systems like the Gamma Knife, CyberKnife has various capabilities that patients benefit from:
- CyberKnife is able to "see" the tumor in real time. CyberKnife takes X-ray images throughout treatment to determine the tumor's position. If it moves, the CyberKnife will move in response, maintaining ultimate precision. Other systems work only from pre-treatment images and are unaware of the tumor's actual position during treatment.
- CyberKnife's design is what is considered "frameless". This means it does not require a head frame screwed into the skull for immobilization, which can cause pain, headache, nausea and risk of infection seen at times with stereotactic frames like Gamma Knife.
- CyberKnife's frameless design provides the flexibility to perform radiosurgery in either a single day or over multiple days. This helps to ensure the safest and most effective course of treatment for each individual. When constrained by frame-based systems like Gamma Knife, treatment session are not as flexible, and are limited to one-day treatment.
