General Practice Residency Program in Dentistry
The Department of Dentistry welcomes you to our web-site and hopes that the information contained herein will be helpful to all prospective applicants to our residency program.
Our job of selecting residents among so many very well qualified candidates is just as difficult as it is for you to select a General Practice Residency Program that will fulfill your individual needs. Our review of your academic records, resumes, and letters of recommendation gives us some information regarding your credentials. This enables us to choose a very select number of candidates who are invited for interviews.
Unfortunately, details of the various General Practice Programs are not always readily available and this can make your selection somewhat difficult. For this reason, we would like to provide some information about our program which hopefully will not only interest you in our program but also help you in becoming aware of what we offer as compared to other programs.
- Jersey Shore University Medical Center is a major teaching affiliate of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. We have fully accredited residency programs in Pediatrics, Medicine, Obstetrics, Surgery, and of course Dentistry. All of these programs have very dedicated program directors and faculty who are very much into academics and teaching. The great advantage to the dental resident is that their rotations through the departments of Medicine and Pediatrics are exceptional educational experiences.
- The patients seen in our clinic offer a wide range of clinical experiences. Unlike some programs where mostly emergencies are treated, our program allows residents to provide our patients with comprehensive care. Residents are able to schedule patients with specialists in all areas of dentistry and have a unique opportunity to focus on areas of weakness and or interest. Residents also have the opportunity to admit and take patients to the Operating Room where dental treatment is rendered under general anesthesia.
- The didactic portion of our program is implemented through various manners.
- Our department sponsors a Continuing Dental Education Series which is co- sponsored with the University of Pennsylvania's School of Dental Medicine. This course consists of nine full day courses presented by well-known speakers from throughout the country. We have over 200 dentists signed up for these courses and our residents have the distinct opportunity of attending these courses as part of their residency program.
- Formal lectures in all areas of dentistry are given to our residents by the attending faculty. Less formal presentations are also given by our attendings in the clinic, sometimes even during patient treatment. Members of our faculty make themselves available at other than scheduled times for resident training as needed.
- Resident Rotations include Emergency Medicine/On Call, Anesthesia,Pediatrics and Medicine. Particulars of these rotations can be found in our resident's manual. Past residents have always found their experiences during these rotations to be very valuable.
- Our On-Call Schedule consists of every third week. Through our definition of a "True Dental Emergency" and appropriate triage management by the Emergency Room physicians, past Dental Residents will attest to the fact that they are not excessively called to the ER. In fact, residents in much larger programs where there are many more residents are called to the ER more than at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
- Jersey Shore University Medical Center offers a very competitive salary of $ 43,072 plus malpractice coverage and health benefits. Residents are entitled to eight sick days, two personal days, six holidays, and four weeks of paid vacation. First year residents will also receive a $350.00 per month living allowance, which is taxable.
- Jersey Shore University Medical Center conforms with all Federal, State and local policies regarding infection and biohazard control. Applicants may contact our program for specifics of these policies.
We believe that Jersey Shore University Medical Center certainly offers an excellent General Practice Residency Program and we are confident that if you select our program and we match, you will be extremely happy with our program.
