The educational philosophy that drives our program is based on the notion that there are three key components essential for successful maturation as a medicine resident: an economically and culturally diverse patient population; a supportive faculty who serve as role models providing superb care for their patients; and progressive opportunities to increase responsibility for management of patient care.
The residency program provides exceptionally strong primary care education. A growing continuity clinic for residents, a neighborhood health center, and private office rotations afford residents a quality primary care experience and exposure to common ambulatory problems.
Ambulatory care rotations include ENT, dermatology, gynecology, geriatrics orthopedics, adolescent medicine and medical rehabilitation.

The Cardiology Division provides the latest in technology: nuclear cardiology, color-flow Doppler echocardiography, trans-esophageal echocardiography, and an active electrophysiology laboratory that goes beyond diagnosis to provide pacemaker insertion, radio frequency ablation and AICD implantation. Similarly, the four state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization laboratories provide diagnostic cardiac catheterization as well as coronary angioplasty, direct coronary atherectomy, and stent placement. Conferences and interactions with the cardiac surgery team add an exciting interdisciplinary perspective to the cardiology experience.
The Infectious Disease Division, with four full-time faculty members, plays a leading role in the educational program. Infectious Disease at Jersey Shore University Medical Center means not only in-patient consultation, but also an outpatient experience in our dedicated HIV Ambulatory Care Center. The Division provides experience in the prevention, recognition and treatment of tropical illnesses as well immersion in key issues in epidemiology important to the internist.

Jersey Shore University Medical Center is also a major referral center for Oncology, Critical Care, and Nephrology. Each of these disciplines melds clinical practicality with scholarly activities—conferences, didactic teaching sessions, and research.
Ten full-time and four part-time physician-educators form the core of the salaried teaching faculty. Seven are subspecialty trained and seven are primary care internists. The dedicated voluntary staff of approximately 170 physicians contribute time to attending rounds, teaching conferences, and electives.
Morning Report is one of the highlights of the learning opportunities in Medicine. The emphasis is on clinical medicine—the ability to take a thorough history, perform a comprehensive symptom-directed physical examination, synthesize the data into a logical differential diagnosis, and order appropriate laboratory and ancillary tests. Faculty regularly challenge residents-and residents are expected to challenge faculty—to be consistent to the principles of evidence-based medicine and cost effectiveness.
The Medicine residency program includes daily lectures, a journal club, morbidity and mortality conferences, and nationally renowned guest speakers. Numerous faculty members are engaged in clinical Research. All categorical medicine residents are required to become involved in scholarly activities and complete at least one project during their tenure at Jersey Shore Univerisity Medical Center.
The best test of a program's strength is in its achievements. Over the years approximately half of our graduates have pursued careers in primary care while half have pursued fellowship training. Virtually all are enjoying fulfilling and rewarding careers. Many have stayed or returned to practice at Jersey Shore. Some have found their way into the ivory tower of academia. The faculty take great pride in the house staff's accomplishments including their average 93% pass rate on the ABIM certifying examination over the past three years.
