Molly Berkowitz, RN, SICU from Jersey Shore University Medical Center

When Molly Berkowitz addresses a class of high school seniors, the reactions can range from apt attention to fainting. That’s because the program she presents covers a very serious topic: the dangers of drinking and driving.

Molly is the outreach educator for the Jersey Shore Trauma Center of Jersey Shore University Medical Center. A registered nurse on the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) for the past six years, Molly travels to high schools throughout Monmouth and Ocean counties to educate students about the dangers of drinking and driving, as well as distracted driving.

“Our program is very graphic and realistic,” Molly notes. “Some kids are horrified, others are enthralled. The important thing is that it leaves an impression and makes them think when they get behind the wheel.”

In addition to lecturing at high schools, Molly also facilitates the monthly Trauma Lecture Series at JSUMC for EMS and first aid squad members. She teaches CPR, TNCC, PHTLS, and is an EMT instructor.

Molly received her associate’s degree in nursing from Brookdale Community College and her BSN from Thomas Edison College. She also has a bachelor’s of arts degree in English and Communications. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Nursing Education, and has received several nursing scholarships from Jersey Shore to help her further her nursing education.

Molly says the way she was raised has a lot to do with her passion for educating people about trauma. It began about 20 years ago when she joined a first aid squad and helped save a woman’s life. She has since been named the squad’s Member of the Year three times.

“In my family it was assumed that you would do something for the community – it’s just part of who I am,” Molly adds.
