Planning a Night Out? Find a Good Babysitter in Advance
You have reservations at your
favorite restaurant, tickets to
a show — you're all set for
a night out. Except… who's
going to watch the kids?
"Don't wait until the last
minute to find a sitter," says
Elaine Donoghue, M.D., a
pediatrician at K. Hovnanian Children's Hospital at Jersey Shore
University Medical Center. "Choosing someone qualified to care
for your child takes time."
Try these tips from Dr. Donoghue:
- Ask people you trust — friends, family, neighbors, coworkers — for recommendations.
- Meet potential sitters. "Talk with them about their experience, and check references," Dr. Donoghue says. "Ask if they have first aid training and know CPR."
- Invite the sitter over when you're home and watch how he or she interacts with your child.
