Take A Stand Against Falls

According to a recent report, falls sent 7.8 million people to the emergency department in 2001. Adults age 65 and older are especially at risk — more than one-third will fall once a year.

And now, the good news: Falls are not a normal part of aging and occur for many different reasons — often ones you can control:

  • Keep floors and stairs free of clutter.
  • Install grab bars in your bathroom.
  • Make sure you have good lighting in your home.

Healthy habits can lessen your risk for falls, too. For example:

  • Stay active. Weightbearing exercises, such as walking and climbing stairs, can help make you stronger — and less likely to fall.
  • Stand up slowly after sitting or lying down.
  • Wear sturdy, rubbersoled shoes around the house.
