What is Traumatic Brain Injury?
Brain Injury is defined as an alteration in brain function that can be traumatic or an acquired injury. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) may occur due to falls, motor vehicle accident or assaults. Acquired brain injury may occur from strokes, bleeds, hypoxic or anoxic brain injury, and tumors.
The experienced clinicians in our brain injury program treat individuals recovering from open and closed TBI, anoxic or hypoxic encephalopathy, and aneurysms. These patients need intensive rehabilitation to confront major physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges during the recovery process.
Traumatic brain injuries represent catastrophic life events that require not only the best coordinated care, but also the emotional support critical to the most successful recovery possible.
Brain Injury Rehabilitation
The Brain Injury and Rehabilitation Program at Shore Rehabilitation Institute offers a comprehensive rehabilitative approach, providing progressive care in a concerted effort to achieve maximum recovery. The rehabilitation team works closely with the patient and family to set and achieve appropriate goals, creating a roadmap to recovery and relieving uncertainties of the recovery process. Family members are fully engaged throughout the rehabilitation process; providing critical support for their loved ones.
Our physiatrists understand that each Brain Injury patient is unique, and has different needs, capabilities and potential. Therefore each patient’s treatment plan is completely individualized and modified as recovery progresses. Patients receive daily visits by a rehabilitation medicine physician and 24-hour rehabilitation nursing care in addition to physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and therapeutic recreation. Case management, neuropsychological, and licensed clinical social worker support are available for consultation as needed.
Our Neuro Rehabilitation Technology Center adds an interactive element to the recovery process. The technology center includes state-of-the-art, advanced robotic equipment to supplement traditional therapies, utilizing virtual reality and video-game style elements to keep patients focused on their goals to recovery. Shore Rehabilitation Institute offers a broad spectrum of Neurological rehabilitation services to patients including inpatient specialty programs, outpatient therapy, and support groups.
