Our outpatient specialty rehabilitation programs consist of:
- Amputee Rehabilitation
Our outpatient therapists employ a dynamic hands-on approach to teach our patients prosthetic gait for community reentry and tips for prosthetic management. They educate patients on residual limb care, safety, skin care, and improving balance for increased prosthetic control. The team works closely with the physician and prosthetic/orthotic practitioner to ensure proper fit and function of the artificial limb. Our goal is to empower and educate our patients in achieving independence and returning to their prior level of function.
- Stroke Rehabilitation
SRI offers a team approach in the treatment of patients post-stroke. Patients may receive a combination of therapy services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. The team focus is striving to meet the patient's goals. Most of our therapists are certified or trained in maximizing motor recovery post-stroke and encourage use of the affected arm and leg. The team often meets with family members to review progress, recommend strategies, and provide suggestions for home modifications, if necessary. Home evaluations are offered to ensure safety in the home environment.
- Brain Injury Rehabilitation
The focus of our outpatient program is to help patients re-learn mobility and life skills while fostering independence and helping patients re-integrate with the community. Cognitive rehabilitation is a strong focus of our program. We work closely with neuropsychology and psychology to address the behavioral and cognitive needs of our patients.
- Cognitive Rehabilitation
Recovery from a brain injury or cognitive impairments related to neurological illness are addressed by our licensed professionals such as occupational therapists specializing in cognitive therapy, speech and language pathologists, and neuropsychologists/psychologists. Cognitive deficits may include problems with memory, problem solving, attention, concentration, judgment, and social interaction. The goals of cognitive rehabilitation are highly individualized and are based on the patient's strengths and weaknesses. Strategies may include re-learning targeted mental abilities, social interaction and pragmatics, and strengthening intact functions.
- Orthopedic Rehabilitation
The therapists at SRI combine excellent manual orthopedic skills with experience in treating musculoskeletal conditions. Our therapists recognize the role of pain in recovering from joint replacements, sports injuries, and other orthopedic surgeries and modify treatments as necessary in order to meet patient goals.
- Vestibular Rehabilitation / Balance Disorders
SRI treats vestibular disorders such as BPPV, vertigo, dizziness, and balance disorders. The therapists help patients resolve their symptoms, improve their balance, and educate on safety and fall prevention.
- Comprehensive Physiatry Services
SRI offers comprehensive outpatient physiatry services that include spasticity management, electro-diagnostic testing including EMG and nerve conduction velocity testing. Our physiatrists are trained in the use of Botox, Baclofen pumps, and nerve blocks to decrease muscle stiffness/tone and improve function. They are available onsite to provide medical management for outpatients that require follow-up after spasticity management.

Wheelchair seating & positioning
SRI's licensed therapists provide evaluation and assessment for customized wheelchair seating and positioning systems. Typical diagnoses the require customized seating include brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke, congenital disorders, and chronic progressive neurological disorders. Evaluations are usually performed with a team that includes an assistive technology specialist (RESNA certified).
Prosthetic and orthotic clinic
Outpatients may be referred for customized bracing needs, prosthetic fitting and follow-up, gait assessments, and prosthetic adjustments. The patient meets with the team for evaluation and recommendations.
Our board-certified physiatrists offer patient treatment strategies to manage muscle stiffness/tone. Treatment options may include use of Botox, Baclofen, and Lidocaine. The physician may use a combination of strategies based on an individual's assessment.
Clinical neuropsychology is a specialty profession that focuses on brain functioning. They are licensed psychologists with expertise in how behavior and skills are related to brain structures and function. The neuropsychologists at SRI provide treatments such as cognitive rehabilitation, behavior modification, and psychotherapy.
