The 2008 Hospital Performance Report recently released by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services shows that Riverview Medical Center ranks among the top three hospitals overall in Monmouth County, also ranking among the top 10% in the state and the best in the county for the treatment of heart attack.

The state's annual Hospital Performance Report, available online at http://web.doh.state.nj.us/hpr measures the state's hospitals treatment of heart attack, congestive heart failure, pneumonia, and surgical infection prevention - four critical areas that reflect a hospital's overall clinical quality.

"Each day the team at Riverview Medical Center is committed to providing excellent patient care, and these numbers are testament to that dedication," explains Timothy Hogan, President of Riverview Medical Center. "With this report, as well as a variety of other surveys, recognitions and benchmarks, we are able to measure our performance and set our goals higher to provide an even greater level of care and patient experience for those in our community and beyond."

The state has traditionally evaluated the three areas of heart attack, pneumonia and congestive heart failure and for the first time this year, also evaluated data on surgical infection prevention. These categories are also measures reviewed at the federal level by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and are widely recognized as reliable indications of a hospital's overall quality. For example, one of the heart attack indicators measures how consistently a hospital provides aspirin upon discharge, a practice that has been accepted as a proven method of reducing the likelihood of a future heart attack.

"It's well documented that every second counts during a heart attack and acting early significantly increases survival," explains David Zukoff, MD, chief of Cardiology at Riverview Medical Center. "That's why our cardiac and emergency care teams are committed to taking the necessary steps to treat patients appropriately upon arrival. This benchmark translates into lives saved and we're proud to be in the top percentile among the best hospitals in the nation."
