Riverview Medical Center Elects First Female Medical Staff PresidentRiverview Medical Center recently elected new medical staff officers for the 2009 - 2011 term, including the appointment of Phillipa Woodriffe, M.D, the first female medical staff president in the hospital's history. Already a pioneer for women in medicine, Dr. Woodriffe's appointment also marks the first female medical staff president in all of Monmouth and Ocean Counties.
Upon receiving her medical degree from Columbia University, in 1977 Dr. Woodriffe became only the fourth female surgical resident at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, New York. She followed that by becoming the first female in Monmouth County to practice surgery 27 years ago.
As the former secretary for the medical staff and longtime member of the Meridian Health Foundation Board, Dr. Woodriffe has been with Riverview for almost 28 years before becoming being appointed Medical Staff President.
"I believe my appointment is significant as we just witnessed our first viable female presidential candidate and vice presidential candidate in the last election. She goes on to say, "Finally, we (women) are evaluated for what we do, and not our sexuality."
Dr. Woodriffe will continue to practice general surgery, as well as maintain her private practice in Tinton Falls.
