Students From Allied Health and Science High School Donate 1,000 Books To Asbury Park Pediatrics
National organization promotes early literacy in children by encouraging parents to read aloud to children both in physician offices and at home.
Asbury Park Pediatrics recently received 1,000 books from the Academy of Allied Health and ScienceHigh School, located in Neptune, which is a participant in the Reach Out and Read program.Students collected the books, which were a mix of new and gently-used, as part of a 9-11 community service project and presented them to the pediatrics practice in September.
"The donation of these books is an invaluable resource for the children who visit this practice," says Amy Peardon, D.O., FAAP, medical director of Asbury Park Pediatrics."Reach Out and Read shines a light on the importance of reading to children and how it can improve a child's wellness and overall development."
The Reach Out and Read program allows pediatricians, nurses, or family physicians the opportunity to give every child a new book to take home. The program also encourages parents to read to their children in the waiting room and suggests that if the parent has difficulty reading, to make up stories to go with the pictures and spend time naming objects.
"This program not only explains to parents why reading to their children is so important, it also helps children grow up with an enhanced love of books," Dr. Peadron adds.
