Jersey Shore University Medical Center to Host Child Car Seat Safety Check
The Regional Trauma Center at Jersey Shore University Medical Center partners with the New Jersey State Police to provide a monthly Car Seat Fitting StationAccording to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car crashes are the leading cause of death for children between the ages of 3 and 14. Almost 9000 lives have been saved by properly used child restraints between 1975 and 2008, but three out of four child passenger safety seats are improperly installed!
The Regional Trauma Center at Jersey Shore University Medical Center has partnered with the New Jersey State Police School and Traffic Safety Unit to provide a monthly Car Seat Fitting Station at the hospital (1945 Route 33, Neptune, NJ 07753). Beginning on Tuesday February 1, 2011 from 3 to 7 p.m., certified Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Technicians from the Regional Trauma Center and the New Jersey State Police will provide car seat installation checks at the old Emergency Department entrance off of Davis Avenue. Each seat check takes approximately 30 minutes, and is free of charge. Going forward, the fitting station will be in operation on the first Tuesday of each month from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m..
No appointments are necessary, but there are a few things interested parents and caregivers should bring to the event. It is recommended that you bring your child with you in the car seat they will be using, so that CPS technicians can ensure that the proper seat and settings are being used. Car seat manuals as well as the vehicle's owner's manual also contain helpful information, and should be available to the CPS technician as well.
