Ocean Medical Center Gets Kids Jumping!

Brick Township students participate in world record breaking effort.

Ocean Medical Center rallied students at Veterans Memorial Elementary School (VMES) to help National Geographic Kids magazine set the Guinness World Records® title for the most jumping jacks in a 24-hour period. To break the record, more than 20,000 people worldwide need to complete one minute of jumping jacks in events occurring between 3 p.m. ET October 11, 2011 and 3 p.m. ET October 12, 2011.

"Let's Jump!" supports First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! campaign, which encourages kids and families to get healthy and active. Mrs. Obama kicked off the 24-hour period with one minute of jumping jacks at the White House on Tuesday.

Fifth grade students from VMES in Brick gathered this morning to do their part in breaking the world record. Over 160 students, teachers, and physical education instructors participated in the timed activity, which was led by fitness instructors from Ocean Medical Center and Meridian Life Fitness.

As a member of Meridian Pediatric Network, the medical center is focused on the wellness of young members of the community. In addition to providing medical care through services such as the Pediatric Emergency Center, the hospital identifies opportunities to teach lessons that can help kids learn about leading active and healthy lives.

"Superintendent Hrycenko and Principal McNamara immediately embraced the idea and helped to coordinate the students," said Dean Q. Lin, president of Ocean Medical Center. "It was a great opportunity to get the kids involved in something that is part of a global initiative, while having fun and getting some exercise at the same time."

Brick Township is the second largest school system in the county and has partnered with Ocean Medical Center for many wellness initiatives in the past. Ocean's fitness team was excited to participate in the "Lets Jump!" record breaking effort, and collaborating with the local school system was a natural fit.
