Southern Ocean Medical Center Offers Geriatric Fracture ProgramSouthern Ocean Medical Center has implemented a Geriatric Fracture Program designed to streamline the care of hip fracture patients over 65 years old, to minimize complications, and maximize a timely return to function.
Program coordinator Reid Gronostajski, PA-C notes that according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), studies have shown that timely repair of hip fractures reduces the risk of death in geriatric patients by twenty percent. The CDC also notes that in 2006 there were more than 316,000 hospital admissions for hip fractures in patients 65 and older. In addition, more than ninety percent of those are caused by falls they report.
"Our program combines the resources of orthopedic surgery, internal medicine and geriatrics, anesthesiology, physical therapy, social work and nutrition to repair the hip fracture and return the patient to their pre-injury level of function as quickly as possible" says Gronostajski.
The program focuses on daily management of the patient by the orthopedic surgeon and internal medicine physician to minimize complications. Also, early and intensive postoperative physical therapy evaluation and treatment maximize the patient's return to independent function.
Close monitoring and treatment of pain and specialized nursing care help to minimize development of pressure sores, infections and delirium. Follow up with the patient's primary care physician for further assessment and management of osteoporosis in order to prevent recurrent fractures is also an important aspect of the comprehensive program.
"An elderly hip fracture can be a scary and life-threatening event, especially when it means losing your independence. The geriatric fracture program at Southern Ocean is dedicated to providing the highest quality care after hip fracture and allowing the patient to return to function as quickly and safely as possible," says Gronostajski.
