Southern Ocean Medical Center Provides Nurse Navigator to Assist Cancer PatientsSouthern Ocean Medical Center has enhanced its oncology program with the addition of a nurse navigator. The role of the nurse navigator is to offer individualized guidance in addressing and overcoming the barriers and challenges that cancer patients, their loved ones and caregivers encounter through their journey of cancer diagnosis, treatment and survivorship.
"My role is to offer psychological support, facilitate new appointments, reinforce education about the diagnosis and treatment, assist with transportation and financial needs and provide beneficial resources that I believe would help them," says nurse navigator Lizzie Martinez, RN, BSN, OCN.
"If one of our patients does not know who to call, he or she can reach out to me and I will provide the guidance that is needed," says Martinez.
This program is a free service and patients can access the assistance of the nurse navigator through physician referral, nurse referral or self-referral. For more information patients can contact Martinez at 609-978-8900, extension 2068.
