Haven Beach Club Raises over $6,000 for Southern Ocean Medical Center's New Emergency DepartmentHaven Beach Club held its 6th Annual Swim-a-thon on Sunday, August 19 to raise money for Southern Ocean Medical Center's new Emergency Department. The event raised $6,653.31 that was presented to Tom Dolan, chairman of Southern Ocean Medical Center Foundation, on Saturday, September 8 at the Club.
The Swim-a-thon is organized each year by the Youth Service Club, a group of teens and pre-teen members of Haven Beach Club, to benefit local charities. The past recipients have been the LBTBP Beachwheels Program, Reclam the Bay, ALO, the Beach Haven First Aid Squad, and the Beach Haven Volunteer Fire Co. #1.
The participants include swimmers of all ages who obtain pledges based on the number of laps they plan to swim. At the conclusion of the event, the swimmers return to the sponsors to collect their donation.
The top swimmer this year was 14-year-old Josie Suddeth with 333 laps. Hailey Skimmons swam 35 laps in the 8-year and under category, Logan Brown did 162 laps in the 9-12 year category, Morgan Parker did 80 laps in the 15-18 year category, Cheryl Parker (adult) 150 laps, and Jim Murphy (senior) swam 110 laps.
"For the last 6 years the Youth Service Club members have spent a month of their summer organizing activities to benefit their community. They were happy to hear of the plan for a pediatric care center in the new Emergency Department and were excited to support this project in 2012," says Kevin Closs, one of the teen chairs of the event.
Teens who organized the Swim-a-thon include the founding members of the Youth Service Club who have participated in the event for all 6 years: Jennifer Cafiero, Kevin Closs, Devon Gonzalez, Charles Verhoog, Julia Wolf, and Jackie Wolf. Jennifer, Julia, and Kevin served as the general chairpersons for this year's event. Heads of other committees include Stephen Cafiero, Morgan Parker, Meghan Friedmann, and Liam Anderson. Lihn McCool, Madelyn Kemmler, Gabrielle Dash, and Julia Carrano operated a craft table, donating their proceeds to the hospital. Adult advisors include Nancy Given, Anne Cafiero, Elizabeth Wolf, and Cheryl Parker.
"We are so proud of these youth members," says Tom Dolan. "We thank the teens for their hard work as well as the adults in the club that have supported them and given them such valuable mentorship. I know I can speak for everyone involved in the Southern Ocean Medical Center emergency department project - that these funds are most appreciated and when the project is complete the teens and preteens who worked so hard will know they will have the very best emergency care available to them and their families and friends."
The day also included a raffle of prizes donated by local businesses.
