Robotic Surgery Now Available at Ocean Medical Center

Arrival of the Da VinciR SiT surgical system adds the newest technology in surgery to Ocean's robust services.

Ocean Medical Center is now home to the newest version of the da Vinci® Si Surgical System, bringing the latest technology in surgery to the medical center's operating room and to the community. This significant arrival offers the surgical staff and residents in the region outstanding treatment options for particular surgical needs.

The first case using the da Vinci Si Surgical System was performed on Tuesday, December 10 by Mark Perlmutter, M.D., Medical Director of Urologic Oncology for Meridian Cancer Care and Ocean Medical Center. Dr. Perlmutter is among several specialists currently credentialed to perform robotic surgery at Ocean Medical Center. Other surgeons include Karim ElSawi, M.D. (gynecologic oncologist), Michael Howard, M.D. (urologist), Michael Manuel, M.D. (gynecologic oncologist), Michael Menack, M.D. (general surgeon), Pierre Mendoza, M.D. (urologist) Glenn Parker, M.D. (general and colon/rectal surgeon), and Mark Schwartz, M.D. (general surgeon). Members of the medical staff are excited about this new resource and more surgeons are slated to be approved for use of the robotic technology in the coming months.

This technological advancement provides Ocean's surgeons with unparalleled precision, dexterity and control that enables a minimally invasive approach for many complex surgical procedures. It can be used for a multitude of procedures, including, but not limited to: prostatectomy, hysterectomy, myomectomy, and colorectal surgery.

Robot-assisted surgery allows patients to have major surgery with only a few tiny incisions. Benefits include faster recovery, shorter hospital stays, less blood loss, less pain, less risk of infection, smaller incisions with less scarring, and a quicker return to daily activities.

"Ocean Medical Center is committed to working with its physicians and offering our community the most advanced resources and technology available," says Dr. Perlmutter. "The new features of the da Vinci robotic system will help us provide the best possible outcomes and is proof of our combined commitment to the latest advancements in minimally invasive surgery."

da Vinci's advanced level of technology takes surgery beyond the limits of the human hand. It has several unique features designed to provide additional clinical benefits and efficiency in the operating room, many of which translate to patient benefits. A few features of the da Vinci include:

  • Enhanced 3D, high-definition vision of operative field with up to 10x magnification
  • New optional dual console allows second surgeon to provide assistance
  • Superior visual clarity of tissue and anatomy
  • Surgical dexterity and precision far greater than even the human hand

The Meridian Centers for Robotic Surgery provide residents in Monmouth and Ocean counties with access to the most current da Vinci Si robotic surgery technology at three convenient locations. In addition to Ocean Medical Center in Brick, the da Vinci Si Surgical System is available at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune and Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank.
