Ocean Medical Center to Offer Free Balance Screenings August 6Problems with balance can disrupt quality of life, may cause difficulty walking or standing, can create periods of lightheadedness, and may even result in potentially dangerous falls.
Individuals who suffer from balance problems are encouraged to attend a free balance screening at Ocean Medical Center. The event will be held August 6 from 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. in the rehabilitation department on the first floor.
Forty percent of people over age 40 experience dizziness or a balance problem at some point in their life. Some of the common symptoms with balance or vestibular dysfunctions include:
. Spinning or dizziness (vertigo)
. Poor balance; difficulty in sitting, standing, bending, and walking
. Periods of lightheadedness
. Feelings of faintness (syncope)
. Problems with eye-head coordination
A thorough evaluation can determine the cause of the symptoms, and a custom treatment plan then developed to meet a person's specific needs. Individuals often experience the following results:
. Improved balance
. Minimized fall risk
. Decreased sensations of dizziness
. Improved stability when walking
. Improvement of neuromuscular coordination
. Decreased anxiety
