Robotic Surgery

Hackensack Meridian Health is the largest and most experienced robotic surgery program in the state. We performed New Jersey’s first robotic surgery more than 20 years ago. Since then, our expert surgeons have pioneered many of today’s robotic procedures, including the single-port approach using only one small incision.

We offer robotic surgery in 11 specialties – from heart surgery to joint replacement to kidney transplant. If you need surgery, you may be able to have it performed robotically by a Hackensack Meridian surgeon, giving you an excellent outcome with less pain and a faster recovery.

Leaders in Robotic Surgery

"It's number one putting the patient first at all times and giving the patient an opportunity for the best surgery with the least amount of trauma..."

Benefits of Robotic Surgery

Hackensack Meridian Health is the largest and most experienced robotic surgery program in the state. While traditional surgery requires a large incision so the surgeon's hands can fit inside the patient's abdomen, robotic surgery requires only two or three small incisions. The robotic arms and camera are positioned in these incisions, allowing all of the surgical movement to take place within the abdomen. The surgeon then has a close-up high definition view of the prostate, kidney or other urologic area and is able to guide the robotic hands to delicately move, cut and suture.

By having your surgery performed robotically by a Hackensack Meridian Health surgeon, you may benefit from:

  • Increased precision, as the robot offers greater flexibility, stability and range of motion than a human hand
  • Decreased blood loss and reduced need for transfusions
  • Less risk of infection
  • Less pain after surgery
  • Smaller external and internal scars
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Faster recovery and return to normal activities

How Robotic Surgery Works

Surgeon Console

Your surgeon sits at a console next to you and controls the movement of surgical tools inserted into your body through one incision (single port) or several small incisions.

Patient-Side Tower

Your surgeon’s movements are translated in real time to operate with four tiny, rotating wristed instruments that perform with greater precision and range of motion than a human hand.

Unparalleled Vision

The system offers a 3D, high-definition view ten times greater than the human eye can see, and  incorporates near-infrared and other imaging to enhance the view of the surgical area.

    Robotic Surgery FAQs

With robot-assisted surgery, patients can have major surgery with only a few tiny incisions. The benefits to the patient may include a faster recover, shorter hospital stay, less bleeding, less pain, less risk of infection, smaller scars, and quicker return to normal daily activities when compared to traditional surgery.

Some of the benefits for surgeons include greater surgical precision, 10x magnification, improved dexterity, enhanced visualization, and improved access.
Robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery entails the use of a surgical robot to allow surgeons to offer more patients the benefits of laparoscopic surgery. The use of this technology helps the surgeon perform more complex operations without the need for a large incision. By combining robotics and state-of-the-art computer technology, surgeons can operate with greater dexterity and control than with traditional surgical approaches.
The surgeon sits at a surgical console next to the patient. The surgeon performs the procedure from the console while viewing the surgical field through a 3-dimensional (3D) magnified image (up to 10x magnification). At the same time the surgeon’s hand movements are seamlessly translated to the robot to complete the surgical procedure. It is important to understand that the robot is controlled solely by the surgeon and is not capable of making decisions on its own. Every step of the surgery is performed through direct input from your surgeon. Through just a few small incisions the size of a pea the surgeon can perform the entire procedure.
The hospital stay is dependent upon multiple factors including the procedure being performed, the patient’s medical and cardiac history, history of prior surgeries, and patient healing. In some instances the patient can go home on the day of surgery and in others the patient stays overnight in the hospital. It is important that you discuss your individual case with your robotic surgeon.
Because robotic surgery requires only a few small incisions, the post-operative pain is usually less than that experienced during open surgery.
Robotic surgery is categorized as robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery. Any insurance that covers minimally invasive surgery generally covers robotic surgery. It is important, however, to note that your coverage will depend on your plan and benefits package. You should check with your insurance carrier for detailed information prior to your surgery.
