Manahawkin Pediatrician Supports New Emergency Department and Encourages Fitness.Michael Bleiman, M.D. chief of pediatrics at Southern Ocean Medical Center has joined forces with the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation to host an exciting athletic event to raise money for the new pediatric care area that will be part of Southern Ocean's new emergency department.
The 5th annual "Martin Truex Jr. Great Causeway Challenge" will be held on October 16, 2011 in Manahawkin, NJ. "The event is for everyone," says Dr. Bleiman. "Adults, children, elite athletes and beginners will all find an activity geared to their interest and ability."
The main event is a duathlon, beginning with a 30-mile bike ride which begins in Manahawkin, crosses the causeway bridge to Long Beach Island and routes north to Barnegat Light and back. The biking is then followed by a 10K run. The duathlon is sponsored by the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation.
There are other less strenuous activities as part of the event including the option to do either the bike ride only, or the 10K only. "The 10K is being sponsored by the Southern Ocean Medical Staff," says Dr. Bleiman.
Additional options at the event include a 5Krun, a 5K walk and a Kid's 1-mile fun run. "The event is held rain or shine and the routes include some of the most scenic views in southern Ocean County," says Dr. Bleiman.
"The purpose of our event is two-fold," says Dr. Bleiman. "At the heart of the event is fundraising with one-hundred percent of the proceeds going toward the construction of the new emergency department expansion at Southern Ocean Medical Center. An anonymous donor has paid for all the expenses of the event.
"Also we want to encourage the entire family to exercise on a regular basis. As a pediatrician I really want families to experience the benefit of exercise and the positive impact it has on everyone's health. The Martin Truex, Jr. Foundation shares our passion for the well-being of kids," he says.
"The monies raised through event participation will help fund the Martin Truex Jr. Pediatric Care Center in the newly expanded Southern Ocean Medical Center emergency department," says Dr. Bleiman. The Medical Center anticipates breaking ground on the new, expanded emergency department in October of 2011 with completion slated for the end of 2013. The project will triple the size of the existing Emergency Department, doubling the capacity and adding a much needed pediatric care area.
