Surgery

The Meridian’s Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery Program provides treatment for a wide range of malignant and non-malignant conditions affecting the liver and pancreas. Our dedicated team is committed to achieving the best possible outcomes for each of our patients.

Purposes of surgery

  • Prevention: If you have a high risk of developing cancer, you may have that area removed before cancer develops.
  • Diagnosis: During a biopsy, your doctor removes a small amount of tissue to see if cancer exists and what type of cancer it is.
  • Staging: Surgery allows your doctor to determine the size of your tumor and whether it has spread.
  • Treatment: Surgery may remove all or part of the cancer. It may be used in combination with other treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
  • Relief: Palliative surgery can alleviate discomfort and treat conditions that often accompany cancer, such as blockages or fluid accumulation.

Types of surgery

  • Minimally invasive surgery: Your surgeon will make the smallest incisions possible to access the area. This type of surgery can ease recovery after surgery.
    • Robotic surgery: A type of surgery where the surgeon controls a robot to maneuver the surgical tools inside the body.
  • Ablative surgery: Energy or temperature extremes are used to destroy cancer or precancerous cells.
  • Traditional surgery: A larger incision to perform the operation. For some tumors, this is the best treatment for the cancer.
