Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

Hackensack Meridian ALS Center

What is ALS?

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Over time, patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis may find it increasingly difficult to control their muscles, making it hard to eventually speak, eat, move and breathe.

Patients diagnosed with ALS require comprehensive care from a variety of specialists. Hackensack Meridian’s ALS Center provides a unique, multi-disciplinary approach that brings together different specialists in one all-inclusive visit, helping to provide the best, most convenient health care experience for patients and families.

ALSA and Joan Dancy Collaboration

Hackensack Meridian ALS Center is the only program dedicated to treating ALS in Monmouth and Ocean counties. Its collaboration with the ALS Association (ALSA) allows Hackensack Meridian ALS Center to exchange information and best care practices with the nation’s leading physician experts and clinics – helping to ensure that people living with ALS in our region have access to specialized care.

Hackensack Meridian ALS Center is also fortunate to have the support of the Joan Dancy and PALS Foundation, who provides valuable feedback, education and in-servicing to enhance the care experience. They see the center as a program which supports their mission, thus, they are able to provide consultative support.
